A guide to soft tissue fillers: Soften wrinkles and boost volume without surgery

There are more than 150 dermal or soft tissue fillers on the market today. This category of cosmetic treatment is noteworthy as a nonsurgical way to conservatively and predictably combat the signs of aging. While each filler is uniquely “engineered” and offers distinctive features and benefits, all fillers generally work as follows:

  • Our board-certified dermatologist at drs skincare in Hamilton, Ontario, Dr. Rahul Shukla, Dr Chuback, and team uses thin needles to precisely inject fillers into specific points of the face.
  • The process is well-tolerated. But, for utmost comfort, we can discuss a topical anesthetic or products formulated with numbing lidocaine.
  • The filler solution “fills in” sunken areas that have sustained volume loss over time (such as the mid-face or cheeks). This process has the added benefit of smoothing lines, wrinkles, and folds around the mouth and nose.
  • Common side effects associated with most fillers are like those that occur with other types of nonsurgical, cosmetic therapies; they include temporary injection site redness, swelling, and tenderness.
  • Albeit it is rare, there can be serious complications that our team will review with you.
  • We provide you with instructions on ways to care for lingering discomfort and are always available to chat with you about any concerns.

Options for treatment

Hyaluronic acid fillers (like Juvéderm®/Restylane/Belotero/Teosyal family of products) are among the most popular. They are considered to be a safe alternative because HA is produced by our bodies naturally. A molecule with moisturizing and lubricating properties, HA-based solutions may boost volume at the temples, cheeks, and lower thirds of the face. Some of these fillers are appropriate for perfecting a deflated pout or softening pesky smile lines.

CaHa fillers like Radiesse® function as “collagen stimulators”. Made from a calcium hydroxylapatite similar to naturally occurring minerals, Radiesse® is tissue-friendly and does not present risks of adverse reactions associated with some synthetic or donor materials. When suspended in a gel, the CaHa triggers collagen production. As the body absorbs the filler, it leaves behind the fresh collagen responsible for firm, plump skin. In turn, this filler gets long-lasting results (up to one year!) in softening chin wrinkles, dimples, smile, and “marionette” lines.

We also offer “hyperdiluted Radiesse®“. By diluting the filler with saline or lidocaine as needed, Dr. Shukla has a versatile option to treat scarring, crepey skin, loose skin in various areas of the body such as the face, neck, arms, cellulite, and other surface imperfections in additional areas of the face, neck, and body. This approach reduces the thickness of the filler for a natural and even application and elevated skin stimulation.

Another durable collagen stimulator, Sculptra®, is formulated with a synthetic poly-L-lactic acid polymer to fill in depressed areas on the temples, cheeks, chin, and jawline for up to two years or longer! Used for decades in dissolvable stitches, PLLA presents a safe way to boost collagen and achieve sustained results.
