Angiofibroma Removal At drs skincare Hamilton, ON
Patient desires removal
Is it an angiofibroma … or something else?
Treating painful, persistent growths starts with trusted diagnoses
Angiofibromas are benign or non-cancerous growths. While they do not pose a health concern, they are persistent and may be a cosmetic concern. Additionally, they are associated with genetic conditions such as tuberous sclerosis, and they also resemble other potentially harmful conditions that might require removal – such as basal cell carcinoma. As a result, it is important to turn to Dr. Rahul Shukla and the team at drs skincare, Hamilton, Ontario, for an accurate diagnosis and management
What are angiofibromas?
This common, non-cancerous type of skin growth is characterized by small fleshy and/or reddish-pink and dome-shaped bumps or papules. They frequently appear on the face and can resemble moles or certain types of cancer. These may be accompanied by tiny, visible blood vessels or capillaries. When many are clustered in the central face (near the nose), angiofibromas may be secondary to genetic conditions such as tuberous sclerosis and multiple endocrine neoplasia (type 1).
What causes angiofibromas?
It is not uncommon for these growths to arise in middle-aged and older individuals. The presence of angiofibroma is associated with an overgrowth of certain cells (fibroblasts), blood vessels, and collagen within the affected areas. It is not known what causes these growths specifically, even though the occurrence of many angiofibromas is related to the rare genetic diseases mentioned above.
Do I Need to treat angiofibroma?
No. Treatment is not required as this is a benign condition. Many patients elect to pursue treatment as the lesions are cosmetically bothersome or can bleed, itch, cause other discomforts.
What treatment options are available to me?
Diagnosis is the first step as, in many cases angiofibroma can look similar to other conditions, some potentially serious. When needed, a biopsy is completed.
A number of treatment options exist, summarized below
- Shave excision
- Excision with sutures
- Cautery
- Laser assisted removal
- Combination therapy – shave excision + laser
