Advances in laser technology continue to change the way dermatologists treat sun-damaged skin. While fractional laser resurfacing is widely recognized for improving skin texture, fine lines, and pigmentation, researchers are also studying whether it may help reduce the risk of certain precancerous skin changes. While these findings are promising, larger clinical studies are still needed before lasers can be recommended specifically for skin cancer prevention.
Most research has focused on basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and actinic keratoses, which are caused by years of ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Actinic keratoses are considered precancerous because some can progress to squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated. Current evidence has not shown that fractional laser treatments prevent melanoma, so patients should continue routine skin examinations and promptly have any suspicious or changing lesions evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
Fractional lasers create thousands of microscopic treatment zones that stimulate the skin’s natural healing response while leaving surrounding tissue intact. As the skin repairs itself, damaged cells are replaced with healthier tissue, collagen production increases, and overall skin quality improves. Researchers also believe these treatments may improve how aging skin responds to UV damage, helping reduce the accumulation of abnormal cells that contribute to precancerous changes.
Clinical research has produced encouraging early results. Studies involving older adults with extensive sun damage found fewer actinic keratoses and fewer non-melanoma skin cancers in laser-treated areas compared to untreated skin. Additional research involving patients with previous facial basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma also found lower recurrence rates following nonablative fractional laser treatments. Although these studies support further investigation, researchers agree that more extensive trials involving diverse patient populations are necessary before definitive recommendations can be made.
