Sweat isn’t a bad thing. It cools us down when we are exerting ourselves and helps regulate our body temperature. You can have too much of a good thing, though. Our Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Rahul Shukla, and his team are experienced in caring for patients with hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating.

Treatment at the office of drs skincare in Hamilton, Ontario, may be on the horizon if you experience sweating that:

  • Disrupts your day-to-day life
  • Causes embarrassment
  • Leads you to avoid social activities due to self-consciousness
  • Affects your choice of clothing, limiting your wardrobe options
  • Interferes with work, school, hobbies, and basic functions
  • Increases your risk of secondary effects and complications, including persistent and severe acne, skin irritation, and infections
  • May be accompanied by sudden onset of night sweats
  • May appear suddenly, dramatically, and inexplicably (without known triggers)

Hyperhidrosis may be secondary to other conditions and factors, ranging from low blood sugar and menopause to endocrine diseases like hyperthyroidism and certain medications used to treat chronic illnesses. Primary hyperhidrosis does not have a known origin, though it is thought to have a genetic component.

The latter form of hyperhidrosis is referred to as “focal” because it tends to be localized – with the sweating occurring in areas such as the underarms, the palms of the hands, and the soles of the feet. The former type of hyperhidrosis listed here is also referred to as “generalized” and is characterized by excess perspiration throughout the body.

Get back your life!

drs skincare appreciates the far-reaching effects that hyperhidrosis can have on individuals’ lives. Although a cure may not be possible, Dr Shukla and his team can review a number of options to help control symptoms. We may also recommend or work with other members of your care team to effectively treat hyperhidrosis.

A number of options exist for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, including the following:

  • Topical agents
  • Oral pills
  • Botox® – an excellent choice for localized hyperhidrosis
    • Used since the early 2000s to safely and predictably block the nerves that trigger the sweat glands (the process responsible for severe perspiration). This treatment may be appropriate for patients whose sweating has not been managed properly with topicals, such as OTC antiperspirants and prescription medications.
  • Iontophoresis
  • Radiofrequency microneedling
  • Surgery
    • No offered at our clinic
