Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a proven way to restore radiant, even-toned skin. Whether you’re treating sun damage, redness, rosacea, or pigmentation, the journey doesn’t end when your treatment session does. Knowing how to care for your skin after IPL is key to achieving smooth, glowing results with minimal downtime.
At DRS Skincare in Hamilton, Ontario, we’re spotlighting the most common questions patients have about IPL photofacial aftercare—so you can feel confident, comfortable, and prepared.
🔅 What Should I Do Immediately After IPL Treatment?
After your final IPL pass, we remove the ultrasound gel used during treatment. Then, we apply a medical-grade broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin, which will be more sensitive to sunlight for several days.
Can I Use Skincare Products or Makeup After IPL?
Yes, but with caution:
- Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.
- You may wear mineral-based makeup immediately post-treatment if needed.
- Avoid active skincare ingredients (like retinol, acids, or exfoliants) for at least 5–7 days.

🔥 What Will My Skin Look and Feel Like?
It’s normal to experience:
- Mild redness or swelling (similar to a sunburn) for a few hours post-treatment
- Sensitivity or warmth that resolves within 1–2 days
- Bruising
Some patients also see areas of darkened pigmentation or sunspots rising to the surface. These spots may resemble coffee grounds or pepper flakes and typically flake off within a week—revealing smoother, more even skin underneath.
How Can I Reduce Discomfort or Inflammation?
To soothe post-treatment redness or swelling:
- Apply ice packs or cold compresses at home for short intervals
- Use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser when washing your face
- Avoid scrubbing or harsh exfoliation
How Do I Protect My Skin From the Sun After IPL?
Sun exposure is one of the most important risks to avoid after IPL. Here’s how to protect your results:
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily—even on cloudy days
- Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for at least 7–10 days
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if spending time outdoors
We’ll recommend dermatologist-approved sunscreens for your skin type during your visit.
When Can I Resume Normal Activities?
Most patients can resume work and daily tasks right away, but we recommend avoiding:
- Strenuous exercise or hot environments (saunas, hot yoga) for the first 48 hours
After this brief “social downtime,” you’ll be back to your full routine—with glowing skin to match.

What If My Skin Looks Worse Before It Gets Better?
This is completely normal. In fact, it means IPL is doing its job:
- Dark spots will rise to the surface and flake off over several days
- Skin texture may look uneven temporarily as damaged cells slough off
- Bruising will eventually resolve
Be patient—your skin is healing and regenerating beneath the surface.
How Many IPL Sessions Will I Need?
Results improve gradually with each session. Most patients benefit from a series of 3–5 IPL treatments spaced 3–4 weeks apart. After your initial series, maintenance treatments every 6 months will help preserve your results.
