At DRS Skincare in Hamilton, Ontario, our team works diligently to provide the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of skin and body concerns. This also includes the diagnosis and treatment of melasma. Dr. Rahul Shukla is a board-certified dermatologist in Canada and the United States and can provide patients with the information they need to control their melasma and improve their self-confidence.

What is melasma?

Dr. Rahul Shukla describes melasma as a unique pigmentation disorder that can cause the formation of brown to gray-brown patches on the face. The condition is more common in women and often affects the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, and upper lip.

Why do I have melasma?

Although the cause of melasma is unknown, it is believed to be related to sun exposure, hormonal changes (such as those that occur during pregnancy), and certain medications. For some patients, it is a temporary condition that will go away, especially if it is hormone related. In fact, it is often known as the “mask of pregnancy” because of its association with pregnant women. With a proper diagnosis, a board-certified dermatologist can determine the right treatment option based on the patient’s current situation and skin goals.

What treatment for melasma is best?

If you are experiencing melasma, Dr. Shukla recommends avoiding sun exposure and using sunscreen regularly. He also suggests considering customized plans that may consist of bespoke skin care, chemical peels, microneedling and or laser therapy or other treatments available at his practice. If you are pregnant, he advises waiting until after delivery to seek treatment. After getting a proper diagnosis, patients can discuss all their options for treatment with the team at DRS Skincare.
