DRS Skincare provides you with clear and complete instructions for aftercare, just as our team in Hamilton, Ontario provided you with equally understandable and thorough directions for preparing your skin before microneedling.

Why are these instructions important?

Microneedling triggers positive changes deep within your skin. As these changes reveal themselves, you may experience red discolouration, puffiness, pinprick bleeding, crusting, flaking, and side effects. By following our instructions for aftercare, we can ease these temporary changes. We also promote and support fast and predictable healing. Adhering to healthy skin products, skincare regimens or techniques, and other behaviours also helps protect against rare complications (as your skin may be more vulnerable to damage in the hours, days, and weeks following treatment).

What skincare products should I use?

We recommend incorporating a gentle cleanser (our team will advise you when to do so). Products that contain nourishing peptides and growth factors are helpful, as they help rebuild and repair the skin’s structural components. Moisturizers also promote healing, so it’s a fallacy that you should refrain from moisturizing the skin to let the treated areas “air out.” Stick to a non-occlusive moisturizer, though, one that does not produce film and will be less likely to clog pores and cause stubborn, tiny white bumps called milia.

What skincare techniques are best as I heal?

We encourage you to use sterile, single-use products whenever possible. Do not apply makeup for at least 24 hours post-procedure and, when doing so, only use brushes that are new or have a one-time use. It is always important to wash your hands before touching your face; however, this is particularly critical to avoid infection as your skin heals. Furthermore, we encourage you to initially refrain from any activities associated with excessive perspiration, including intense workouts, saunas, and hot tubs. We will provide more details on when to integrate makeup, exfoliants, retinols, and other potentially irritating products back into your routine.

How is my skin more vulnerable to damage?

In addition to the risk of infections mentioned above (due to how microneedling disrupts the skin’s natural barrier), your skin may be more sensitive to the effects of harmful UV light from the sun. No good skincare routine would be complete without a good sunscreen. You should be particularly vigilant about applying and reapplying an adequate amount of sunscreen before you go outside, regardless of how cloudy or overcast the skies may be, as photosensitivity is common following microneedling and other aesthetic procedures.

When in doubt about any products or activities to use after treatment, just ask us! You may also contact our office in Hamilton, ON, if you have any concerns about how your skin is healing. While everyone heals differently, it can generally take up to 12 days for side effects like sensitivity, redness, tightness, and flaking to go away fully (depending on the depth of treatment required to correct your skin concern).
