Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a powerful and versatile treatment used to address a wide range of skin concerns—from sun damage and brown spots to rosacea and telangiectasia, aka broken blood vessels (e.g., spider veins, “blood vessels”). At DRS Skincare in Hamilton, Ontario, we’re shedding light on the key steps to prepare your skin for this popular, light-based procedure.

What Is IPL Therapy Used For?

IPL photorejuvenation is ideal for:

  • Sunspots and age spots
  • Redness and rosacea
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Spider veins
  • Broken capillaries
  • Photoaging

Step 1: Book a Consultation

Before undergoing IPL, a consultation is essential. We’ll evaluate your skin type, medical history, and treatment goals to ensure IPL is safe and suitable for you. In some cases, we may perform a test spot to observe how your skin responds to the light.

Who Should Avoid IPL?

IPL is most effective and safest for fair to medium skin tones. Individuals with darker skin tones are at higher risk for pigmentary changes due to the way melanin absorbs light. We will advise on alternatives if IPL is not right for you.

Avoid Tanning and Self-Tanners

Avoiding sun exposure and self-tanners, such as “sunless” or spray tans, for at least two to four weeks before treatment is crucial. Tanned skin increases the risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, or hypopigmentation during IPL.

Medications and Products to Avoid Before IPL

During your consultation, we will review your:

You may be asked to discontinue:

  • NSAIDs (like aspirin or ibuprofen) for at least one week prior
    • Although you can have treatment while on this class of medication, brusing risk increases significantly
  • Retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other active skincare for 3–5 days before treatment
  • Waxing, peels, or aggressive exfoliation in the week leading up to your appointment

How to Prepare on Treatment Day

On the day of your appointment:

  • Arrive with a clean, makeup-free face
  • Avoid moisturizers, serums, and sunscreen prior to your visit
  • We’ll provide protective eyewear during treatment
  • A cooling gel will be applied to the treatment area
