Things you can do to get the best results from melasma laser treatment
DRS Skincare cannot overemphasize the importance of following the instructions we provide before any treatment is performed at our office in Hamilton, Ontario. Failure to prepare your skin properly can worsen the condition we are trying to treat. It can even cause new skin challenges to arise.
What is involved with preparing for melasma treatment?
Of course, there are many different treatments for melasma. Each treatment involves various steps, processes, risks, and potential results. Regarding lasers for melasma, we may ask that you discontinue taking certain medications and using specific skincare products before your appointment. It is also essential to minimize sun exposure and to be particularly vigilant about protecting your skin from the effects of UV exposure from the sun.

What medications will need to be discontinued?
During a consultation, one of our specialists will discuss any medications you are taking. We may need to adjust or even temporarily pause the use of these drugs. Specific instructions are based on your medical history, overall health, risks, and other factors. Those medications that can increase your risk of skin sensitivity, irritation, bruising, and prolonged healing include:
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Birth control
- Antibiotics
- Retinoids
- Blood thinners
And what skincare products should be avoided?
Products that contain harsh and irritating ingredients, such as acids and exfoliants, should generally be discontinued as specified by one of our providers. These products can increase the risk of burns and other damage, as they weaken the skin’s protective barrier. As with other products mentioned here, they can also increase your risk of photosensitivity. Instead, we encourage using gentle cleansers and moisturizers.
Why is sun protection so important before treatment?
Protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation from the sun and tanning is a foundation of all skincare regimens. However, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF daily and minimizing direct sunlight in the weeks leading up to treatment is particularly important. When your skin is tan, it can affect how the laser works and your treatment results. Additionally, good “sun hygiene” helps to support optimal results, as melasma is often triggered or worsened by sun exposure.
