What treatment may be best for me?

Scar reduction at our office in Hamilton, Ontario, takes many different forms. The technique or treatment that may be appropriate for you depends on factors such as the type of scar present. It is essential for us to evaluate your skin. From there, we can walk you through recommended products, medications, and therapies as appropriate.

Why do scars form in the first place?

Scars arise as part of the healing process. When your skin is wounded or otherwise traumatized due to a past fall on a bike or chickenpox in childhood, the body goes to work to attempt to heal the wound or injury. In doing so, new tissue is sent to the affected area. When the damage penetrates deeply into the skin, the tissue that is created is thicker than the top or superficial layer. The scar manifests as thickened and discoloured tissue. It stands out from the surrounding skin. With age, scars may fade or otherwise change colour.

What type of scars can be treated?

The highly talented and qualified specialists at drs skincare can treat many types of scarring in the affected area.

Treatments vary depending on the type of scarring that we need to treat. For instance, acne and chickenpox can present as depressed scars. In this case, too little tissue may be present during the healing process, resulting in an “indent” instead of a raised area or scar. Hypertrophic or raised scars are associated with the process mentioned previously. These scars stick out from the surrounding skin as a bump or elevated area. Certain types of scars, like keloids, tend to grow very large and beyond the traumatized or injured site. They can expand to the point where they rub up against clothing or limit your mobility.

What are some examples of treatments?

There is no silver bullet for all types of scarring. In fact, there may not even be a single appropriate type of treatment for your scar.  It is essential for you to understand that although we attempt to reduce your scar as much as possible, we often cannot eliminate your scar entirely.

Having most technologies to treat scars, we customize treatments based on presentation involving many of the following therapies:

  • Subcision to release tethered-down scars
  • TCA cross to help build collagen for deep scars
  • Microneedling to induce collagen production
  • Radiofrequency microneedling – induce collagen production
  • Fractional resurfacing laser – induce collagen production:
    • Fraxel
    • Fractional CO2 laser
  • Injectable products:
    • Neuromodulators such as Botox/Dysport/Xeomin release scar tissue
  • Collagen-building products such as Hyperdilute Radiesse, Sculptra
    • Hyaluronic acid-based injectables to help fill superficial scars
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) – helps with healing and improves results
  • Skincare products
    • Topical silicone to further enhance scar remodeling

Ultimately, we work with you to formulate a plan that will give you the best results and work for your lifestyle.
