Risk factors for Acne and Acne treatments available

Dr. Rahul Shukla is a board-certified dermatologist who describes acne as a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the sebaceous gland of the skin.

What types of acne may develop?

There are several types of acne lesions: comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Comedones are small bumps on the skin that are caused by a build-up of sebum and dead skin cells. Papules are small red bumps, while pustules are bumps that are filled with pus. Nodules are large, painful bumps that are deep in the skin, and cysts are large, pus-filled sacs that can cause scarring. Any combination of these types may be present on the skin.

What are the risk factors for acne?

There a several reasons why a patient might develop acne. These include genetics, hormones, and lifestyle choices. Acne is more common in teenagers and young adults, and it tends to run in families. Hormones can also play a role in acne development, as changes in hormone levels can lead to an overproduction of sebum from the sebaceous glands of the skin. Lifestyle choices, such as smoking and certain foods, may also contribute to acne development.

What treatment for acne is best?

Acne management often involves multimodal therapies consisting of skin care, topical prescription medication, oral prescription medication, chemical peels, microneedling and energy based devices such as lasers. Dr. Rahul Shukla and his team will often customize a management plan that is tailored to your preferences and goals.

Booking an Acne appointment

Acne consultation is a service insured by OHIP and generally requires a referral from your general practitioner, nurse practitioner, or a walk-in clinic. Therefore, to receive a treatment that is covered by OHIP, we advise you to obtain a referral through these channels first.

However, if you have already been diagnosed and treatment has been initiated, yet you’re seeking additional services or support, we’re here to assist you. At our clinic, we offer a range of supplementary services that fall outside the scope of OHIP coverage, and these do not require a referral.

These services include advanced and personalized acne care, such as:

  • Extended, in-depth skincare consultations,
  • Chemical peels
  • Radiofrequency micro-needling (morpheus8) and micro-needling treatments for acne scarring, active inflammatory, and comedonal acne
  • Vascular lasers (Excel V) for post-inflammatory erythema and redness
  • Picosure pro for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Aviclear laser to treat active acne
  • Non-prescription therapies and access to the latest skincare products

If you feel that you may benefit from any of the above, please call us so we can get started on your journey to a clear skin.

Our goal is to help you effectively and efficiently prevent and minimize your acne, manage active outbreaks, and reduce the appearance of acne scarring for improved overall skin health.

At drs skincare, we understand that clear skin means not only just the reduction of acne, scars, and blemishes but it is also the restoration of confidence that comes when you can put your best face forward.
