What types of acne may develop?

There are several types of acne lesions: comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Comedones are small bumps on the skin that are caused by a build-up of sebum and dead skin cells. Papules are small red bumps, while pustules are bumps that are filled with pus. Nodules are large, painful bumps that are deep in the skin, and cysts are large, pus-filled sacs that can cause scarring. Any combination of these types may be present on the skin.
