What are the best treatments for smokers’ lines? At drs skincare Hamilton, ON
Our providers at drs skincare work routinely with patients in and around the communities of Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Grimbsy, Niagara, Burlington, Oakville, and Toronto, Ontario, who are interested in addressing imperfections on the face. This includes fine lines and wrinkles that often develop with time due to skin laxity. Additionally, dynamic wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead folds, glabellar lines, lip lines, and smokers’ lines can also develop.
Perioral wrinkles or “smokers’ lines,” aka “bar code lines,” are a frustrating issue for many where vertical lines develop around the mouth at rest and when moving the mouth. Although smoking is a risk factor, it is one of many factors believed to lead to this issue.
What is the cause of smokers’ lines?
Although we do not know the precise cause of these lines, a combination of factors is believed to play a role, including:
- genetics
- repetitive puckering of lips, which can occur from the following
- involuntary movement – i.e., habit
- playing certain instruments
- using straws frequently
- smoking or vaping
- sun exposure
Management of perioral wrinkles, “smoker’s lines”
Although there is no perfect solution for this frustrating issue, we routinely use a combination of therapies to help manage smokers’ lines, including the following:
Prevention
- Lifestyle modifications
- If you reduce behaviours that cause repetitive lip puckering movements, such as smoking or vaping, it can prevent smoker’s lines from forming
- Neuromodulator injections such as Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport work to prevent the formation of lip lines
Stimulating collagen and elastin growth
- Radiofrequency microneedling, such as Morpheus8, is used to help stimulate collagen and elastin growth, filling in lines
- Fractional CO2 laser helps reduce lines by using laser energy to trigger the growth of collagen and elastin to help tighten skin
Filling lines
- Soft tissue fillers can help fill in lines around the mouth.
In most cases, we use a combination of therapies to give you the best result.
