Neuromodulators present one of the most popular and widely used therapies available at our office in Hamilton, Ontario. You may know these injectable solutions by the brand name Botox®. However, Botox® is just one type of neuromodulator. We also offer Dysport® and Xeomin®. Dr. Shukla will advise on the best product for you following a consultation at our clinic.

An introduction to neuromodulators

Also known as neurotoxins, the products within this category of aesthetic treatment all generally work in the same way. Formulated with a highly-purified toxin protein, Botulinum Toxin-A, these solutions are precisely injected into specific muscles of the face with very thin needles. Once just the right amount of the solution is injected into the right points of the face, the chemical process that signals your muscles to contract is disrupted. These muscular contractions are responsible for expression lines.

Small grooves form underneath the skin’s surface when you frown, squint, or otherwise express yourself with your face. In youthful skin full of springy elastin and firming collagen, these lines are “dynamic” and only visible during the act of making the expression. However, due to the loss of these beneficial proteins as we age, dynamic lines become “static” ones that are visible even when the face is at rest. By interfering with this process, the muscles remain relaxed, and the expression lines are softened. These injectables may also be used as a “prejuvenative” treatment to stop such lines from arising in the first place.

Since our professionals inject these solutions so precisely, you still look natural. Your face doesn’t appear “frozen.” You still look like yourself, only more refreshed. These treatments are most appropriate for patients with lines and wrinkles in the upper third portion of their face; notably, they are indicated for patients with “crow’s feet” around the eyes and “frown lines” between the eyes and on the forehead.
