Putting your best face and self forward by putting scars behind you with trusted, tailored therapies
Revision: To alter, adapt, adjust, or modify something. So, by definition, scar revision is all about modifying or altering the appearance of scars. To us, the effects of transforming a scar in this manner are way more than skin-deep. In many ways, our team at DRS Skincare in Hamilton, Ontario, is also rewriting your personal “story.” Each scar has its own story to tell. If you want that scar gone, the story that led to such a visible mark is likely traumatic, negative, and simply a memory that you want to put behind you. Our patients deserve to move forward with a positive outlook and a new lease on their lives.
What scars do you treat?
Like other conditions treated at our office, scarring takes on many different forms. The type of scar and its associated characteristics are dependent on how the scar formed in the first place. Scars are generally our body’s response to wounds. In an effort to heal the injured or wounded site, too little or too much collagen may be produced. The scar may be hypertrophic or raised when too much collagen is made. When too little collagen is produced as the wound heals, the resulting scar may be atrophic or depressed.
Scars can also be pigmented, without pigment, white and red, or erythematous.
Our professional team is highly empathetic to our patients’ unique needs and journeys. We most frequently treat scars that are painful reminders of past acne breakouts, surgical procedures and illness, accidents or other trauma, and episodes of self-harm. We also appreciate that effective treatment is an incredibly powerful and influential part of our patients’ overall healing journeys.

Will my scar get better on its own?
Scars can fade over time to the point where they are barely noticeable. Now, this is only true for some types of scars. Keloid scars, for instance, are particularly persistent. They tend to grow beyond the original wound or area of injury. They may grow so big that your range of motion and mobility are negatively affected. This type of scar rarely, if ever, goes away on its own (without medical intervention).
What scar revision might be best for me?
We consider factors such as the type of scar, its likelihood of fading over time, your age, and the age of the scar itself. We also account for your overall health, including any mental, emotional, and physical impacts of the scar. We understand that scarring can have an outsized, negative influence on your life. Additionally, we cannot overemphasize the importance of partnering with a qualified specialist practice like the team at DRS Skincare. Some serious conditions, such as skin cancers, can resemble certain types of scars; for instance, pinkish-red basal cell carcinomas that dip in the centre may be mistaken as acne scars. Some skin cancers may even originate from scars.
Appropriate treatment always starts with fully understanding the condition or trouble spot we need to treat. Scars at our office in Hamilton, Ontario, have been dramatically improved or eliminated, often using a combination of different modalities such as laser therapy, microneedling and/or radiofrequency microneedling, prescription therapy, botox, and skin care.
Lasers commonly employed to treat scars include fractional CO2 laser, Fraxel laser, and Vascular lasers such as Excel V laser and Picosure Pro laser.
Microneedling and Radiofrequency (RF) assisted microneedling, aka morpheus8, are sometimes added to the treatment regimen.
Neuromodulators such as Botox help relieve tension on the scar and can further improve scar tissue.
Prescription therapy will be commonly used depending on the scar type, and skincare is often added to the repertoire to further improve results. In some cases where scars lack pigment, off-label Latisse may be used in an attempt to bring back pigment.
In order to best treat your scar, a consultation is the first step. We will assess your scar and customize a treatment plan combining multiple modalities to give you the best outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What types of scars can be improved with scar revision?
Scar revision can improve many scar types, including acne scars, surgical scars, traumatic scars, hypertrophic scars, and some keloids. Treatment is tailored to the scar’s location, size, and thickness, and most scars can be softened and made less noticeable with the right plan.
How does a dermatologist choose the best scar revision method?
Your dermatologist assesses scar depth, texture, pigmentation, and tension, as well as your skin type and healing tendencies. Treatment options may include surgical excision, laser therapy, microneedling, steroid injections, or combination treatments. Personalized planning improves results while minimizing risk.
What can patients expect during scar revision?
This depends on the approach. Surgical scar revision is performed with local anesthetic and involves removing or repositioning scar tissue. Non-surgical options such as lasers or microneedling remodel the scar by stimulating collagen production. Most treatments are performed in-office and are well-tolerated.
How long does it take to see results?
Some improvement may be visible within weeks, but scar remodeling continues over months. Many scar revision plans involve multiple sessions for the best results, and your final outcome depends on scar type, location, and your skin’s healing response.
Are there risks or side effects?
Side effects vary by treatment but may include temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or pigment changes. Rare risks include infection, recurrence of raised scarring, or worsening texture. Risks are reduced when treatment is performed by an experienced dermatologist and proper aftercare is followed.
Can scar revision techniques be combined?
Yes. Combination therapy often produces better outcomes. For example, surgical revision may be followed by laser or microneedling to further improve texture and color. A stepwise plan allows more precise correction over time.
What aftercare is required?
Aftercare depends on the procedure but often includes keeping the area clean, avoiding sun exposure, and using recommended ointments or dressings. Silicone gel or sheets and a gentle massage may be recommended to soften scars. Following instructions carefully improves healing and results.
